Candles: A Brief History
By Prime in Society | 0 comments
We don’t know much about when candles originated. The Egyptians are generally given credit for the first candles in use, while the Romans continued to improve on the design, adding wicks and experimenting with materials for the candles. Candles at this point were made from tallow, and in the Middle Ages beeswax candles made their debut. These were an instant hit because they had none of the strong odors that tallow emitted while burning.
The world’s first experience with scented candles came when colonial American women discovered the joy of burning wax derived from boiled fruit of the bayberry bushes. Since then, of course, there have been many varieties and sophisticated versions of richly scented candles for us to choose from, with an unlimited range of fragrance choices. Aromatherapy candles allow you to enjoy the soothing notes of lavender, the sweet romance of rose, and the invigorating freshness of lemon and grapefruit. Does the smell of blueberry muffins do something to you? No problem! There are muffin flavored delectable, lip smacking, food flavored candles that you can light when you’re in the mood for a muffin, but far away from a sweet treat! In fact, these edible flavored candles could actually be a substitute for the real thing, filling your senses, and thereby killing your cravings for the calorie-laden treats themselves!
