Get your own occupation disability insurance

After finishing my residency I was ready to jump right into my very own practice. The financial realities of running a business were the first reality that slammed into me, so I sought out the right opportunity to join an established private practice. After receiving a great offer, I was told that should I come to work with them, I would have to secure my own occupation disability insurance.
Now I really did not understand this; I would have thought this was part of joining up with the established firm. I was enlightened by the senior most partner during my final interview. Basically what he told me was that the practice was able to pay well above average salaries and dividends to its member doctors, and one of the ways they were able to do that was by requiring us to secure disability insurance for physicians with ratings too new to receive the best rates.
They really didn’t teach us this stuff in medical school, but after hearing it explained it made a lot of sense. Why penalize the entire income producing team when everyone could put more profits in their pockets. And after checking out insurance quotes, I knew I would still take home more with this firm than with any other that had made me offers.
