Growing Vegetables at Home

Recently, we visited a friend who had been growing vegetables at home in her backyard. It started as her child’s science fair project and spiraled into a new family pastime. Seeing how the children enjoyed watering, caring for and picking the vegetables, she decided to plant a garden full of healthy offerings and options for her family’s meals. The children have enjoyed seeing the results of their labor and are more interested in eating their vegetables at mealtime since they personally oversaw the growth of their meal choices.
We decided to embark upon the same experiment and were hoping to encourage our children to enjoy eating their vegetables. A mother will do just about anything to encourage her little ones to pick up a tomato or carrot over a fruit roll up. We planted a variety of vegetables in our garden at the base of our outdoor garden wall fountain and brought in rich soil to encourage the development of our project. With lots of rain and watering, we began seeing sprouts within weeks. The children were so excited to go out and water and pick weeds and we found our evening rituals included a walk to our garden. As our plantings bloomed and grew, we added wall fountains to our garden. Our new pastime has been come a family project by growing delicious, nutritious vegetables in our home.
