Giving Up Your Career for a Job

jobMost people start out their work life in a job and end up in a career. However, some people do things the opposite way. They work their way up through the ladder of a career only to decide that they want to go back to having just a job.

An example of this might be the professional stock broker who gives up his job to work as a park ranger. He moves away from Wall Street to a remote town in Canada so that he can work at a place like Banff National Park. He makes a lot less money than he used to and he doesn’t have the professional credibility that he once did. So why does he do it? It’s because he values the chance to spend his days working in a beautiful national park.

The people who move from a career to a job tend to do so because they figure out that they value something else in life more than their careers. They want to be home more with their kids or they want to travel more or they simply want to work less. It’s fine to move from a job to a career and on up through the ladder of success. However, it’s also fine to go the other way too.
