Pitfalls of Telecommuting Virtually

I love working as a freelance writer.  The Internet has made it possible to earn a good income as a writer in ways that it never was before.  You can search for contract jobs online, research businesses and markets online, research your projects via the Internet, and communicate with clients or deliver your work electronically.

I particularly like the research aspect — it has allowed me to become an expert and write on topics I never would have though possible before.  For instance, if I had a client ask me to write on hearing loss, I could pretty easily find everything I needed via a combination of the Internet and my local library’s online catalog.

There are significant drawbacks, however.  One that I find has the most impact on my life is that it is difficult to get away from your work.  Because email really doesn’t have business hours, I often get emails from clients in the evenings and on weekends, and more often than not I feel compelled to answer them as quickly as possible.  When your computer is both your personal and your business computer, it’s hard to shut it off and not work!
