Monitoring the Flow

Recently a friend of mine was telling me about the importance of mass air flow meters. I had always wondered how that natural gas companies and other companies kept track of gasses in their plants and in their lines. Apparently most companies have a whole network of monitors and devices dedicated to flow measurement.
Devices used to track the flow of various gasses are necessary for the safety of the people in the plants, but also for the customers that they deliver services to. Many cities have pipelines that carry gas under them and proper monitoring can help to avert disaster. Imagine the disasters that could happen if a major pipeline were to explode under a major city.
A flow meter can help to track leaks as well. Not all leaks are dangerous, but they can be costly. Sometimes a leak is the result of a faulty pipe or valve. Proper flow monitoring can help to track down these leaks. This helps save the company and eventually the consumer money when gas is not wasted. Meters can also track heating and cooling of a plant as well. The safety of employees is a top concern for plant managers. If the employees are safe, then usually the plant is in good running order.
